MidpSSH stable version 1.6.0 released
After over a year as the development version, and off-and-on development, I have released version 1.6.0 of MidpSSH. This is functionally identical to the last development version 1.5.7.
The major features are Keyboard Interactive authentication and an HTTP proxy solution for people behind telco firewalls.
If you don’t know about MidpSSH, it is an SSH client for use on Java enabled mobile devices such as cell phones. If you use SSH then MidpSSH could save you a trip to a computer if you’re in a bind.

Congratulations for this wonderful hack release!
I read about some guys trying to control their Linux PCs from within the mobile at ‘ardentice’. So I tried your app and seems to work fine for my Vodafone 710 BT. Neat ^_^

Hi, Congat’s with this great release, I use it from dev-version 1.5.6 and it helps me to administrate my workserver from any place. (Of course, when I want to do that;).
Some questions here:
– Can I expect Cyrilic encoding support in this great midlet?
I’m from Russia and get trouble with all “cyr”-named files.
– I can’t find your forums, there was some answers to questions, that I must sometimes to ask. Can You give me link to forums?
PS sorry, my English is not so right, like couple year ago.
PPS …And THANK YOU!

Thank you. I think I do remember we exchanged some email about Cyrillic encoding. I don’t have any experience with Cyrillic especially however I do have experience with character encoding in general. MidpSSH is probably US-ASCII at the moment… are the characters necessary for Cyrillic included in any of the ISO character sets? Which one? Or is there a specific character encoding required? If you can point me to some more information about it we can discuss it further!
I’m sorry the forums are currently closed because they were overrun with spam. I’ve thought a lot about the forums, they were helpful, however I felt that the people who could best help – who had already got MidpSSH working on their device – were no longer reading the forums! So I’m back to email coordination at the moment while I think of a better solution…

In Cyrilic encoding are many encoding sets, they are:
windows-1251 (cp-1251)
Koi8-r
Utf-8 (16 bit, doubles traffic)
Cp-866 (dos encoding)
May be there is some more sets, I can’t remember now.
I think, that the reason is to use two or three sets. Koi8-r (as most common for linux) and 1251 (because sometime windows users did’nt know about encodings as is) or utf8 (as more universal, than others, but cause traffic doubling)
Thanks for fast reply!

Hi Pha[N]toM,
It sounds like perhaps Koi8-r might be the best encoding to use? I have heard people mention it before. I will look into it. Can you perhaps email me a text file with Koi8-r encoding so I can test with it?
cheers,
Karl

Thanks Pha[N]toM,
Have you seen Russian characters displayed correctly in any other Java applications? I would have hoped that they’d show up correctly when using the Device font setting in MidpSSH, but I guess the terminal implementation is mangling the characters somehow.
What we need is a Russian speaking developer to have a look and see if they can see where it is going wrong! There will definitely be some; I’m going to check my email archive to see if I can find somebody.

Of cause I’ve seen russian characters in java applications, there is (not all):
Jimm – jimm.org
SnIRC – irc.senet.ru/files/
There is more applications.
I think in jimm project more russian developers, than in other open-source java projects. I’ve made an icon and status icons for it.

I have a shell at rootshell.be, tonight I’ll give to you my login, after some checks about encodings and filenames.
There is a project, about converting encodings:

The phone prints the following:
Connecting to myserver.com……

Waits here for a wihle, and prints “Writer IO exception”.
The server don’t displays any sign of connection.
If I try to reach the proxy, from a computer it displays the ip, port and others. From phone, noting
I tried all builds of 1.6.0, and becomed the same results.
The ssh access from my phone would be very important for me.
Is there a really working (tested), and downloadable version for my phone? (please write some links)

Hello! Good program!
Is there any progress with cyrillic characters? Do you need help in this area? I think one of the simpliest ways is to get font files from users and to include them into the separate distribuions. I would be glad to implement this feature.

@Andrew I’m sorry I’m no longer developing MidpSSH. Please feel free to grab the source and implement. I will be happy to host or link to your Cyrillic version!

thanks for the prog. it runs perfect on my htc-s620 (dash). i am still getting comfortable using it but if one can get used to vi this should be a snap
i plan to use it to admin my web servers when i am on the go. which until now was not very often because too many servers and i could not be far away in case of server problems. my hope is this buys me some time out of my prison (my house). thanks a ton!
